NASV

I believe you should read a translation you can understand and read consistently. I used to read the NIV primarily as it is easy to read and it is a translation put together by several denominations of believers.

I was training to teach sunday school to second graders when I noticed they were using a NASV translation for the kids. I asked my mentor about why they would be using this version and she indicated the NASV was a higher reading level and the kids were reading at this level. After class that day I went down to the church bookstore with my NIV bible in my hand and purchased an NASV translation. With a college education I had to ask myself "are you smarter than a second grader?", lol.

I have also spoken to people who have been to seminary who say the NASV is the most accurate translation of the Hebrew and Greek texts. Although the NASV may not be as smooth to read, the accuracy to the original language is important to me.

I believe the NASV is the best translation for study, but I also believe a translation which is accurate and easy to read is beneficial as it helps develop the habit of reading God's word. I like having multiple versions to compare the wording, but my primary source for study is the NASV.

Translations of the Bible

When I read I use the Open Study Bible (has excellent references at the front, under the text and the back)in New King James. When I do a more in-depth study I cross reference several versions such as the NKJV, NIV and the Complete Jewish Bible and I use a concordance along with a Bible dictionary. Occasionally I look at the Message to see what a scripture would read like "on the street!"

Favorite Bible Translation

I have two favorite Bible translations, the New Living Translation, cause it's soo easy to just pick up and read AND understand, The other is the Amplified Translation, it's a great translation to go deeper.
