40 DAYS OF PRAYER

Part 1 – When The Church Prays Together
(Selected Scriptures)

March 24, 2019
Dr. Mark S. Hartman, Lead Pastor

INTRODUCTION

A. I am hoping that a new hunger to pray together emerges for the empowering of this ministry and the empowering of our lives individually and as families of this church.

B. Gathering just to pray is a more powerful thing to do than maybe we have realized.

C. I want us to become convinced that God has sovereignly ordained to empower this church and use this church to impact this region and around the world through praying together.

1. GOD WANTS TO EMPOWER HIS WORK BY HIS SPIRIT.

A. John 14:16-17   And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever–  17  the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, for HE lives with you and will be in you. (NIV)

B. Acts 1:8  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. (NIV

C. The Holy Spirit comes to live inside of us at the moment we receive Jesus Christ as our Savior.  (Romans 8:9)   This Holy Spirit baptizes us into the body of Christ, the Bible calls the church, at the point of our salvation.  (1 Corinthians 12:13)

D. From the beginning to the end of the book of Acts there is one abiding theme – the work of the Holy Spirit through people…any people…who are yielded to Christ.

E. The book of Acts is truly the Acts of the Holy Spirit.

F. The greatest examples of prayer in the book of Acts are actually praying together as groups.

2. PRAYING TOGETHER WAS MODELED AND PRACTICED BY JESUS.

A. Matthew 7:7, 8  Keep asking, and it will be given to you. Keep searching, and you will find. Keep knocking, and the door will be opened to you.

B. Matthew 18:19  Again, I assure you: If two of you on earth agree about any matter that you pray for, it will be done for you by My Father in heaven.

3. PRAYING TOGETHER IN THE NEW TESTAMENT WAS ALWAYS THE CONDUIT FOR POWER.

A. Acts 4:23-31   As soon as they were freed, Peter and John returned to the other believers and told them what the leading priests and elders had said.   24  When they heard the report, all the believers lifted their voices together in prayer to God: “O Sovereign Lord, Creator of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them — 25  you spoke long ago by the Holy Spirit through our ancestor David, your servant, saying, ‘Why were the nations so angry? Why did they waste their time with futile plans?   26  The kings of the earth prepared for battle; the rulers gathered together against the LORD and against His Messiah.’  27  “In fact, this has happened here in this very city! For Herod Antipas, Pontius Pilate the governor, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel were all united against Jesus, your holy servant, whom you anointed.  28  But everything they did was determined beforehand according to your will.

29  And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word.

30  Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”

31  After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness. (NLT2)

B. There is great power God wants to unleash upon this church through us praying together.

C. Psalm 27:8   My heart says of You, “Seek His face!” Your Face, LORD, I will seek. (NIV)

4. EVERY GREAT MOVEMENT OF GOD IN HISTORY CAME THROUGH CORPORATE PRAYER.

Every revival that ever happened, happened because God’s people gathered in groups to pray, their lives got cleaned out and God’s power fell upon them.

The Action Steps I Will Take This Week Are…

  • I will open my heart for God to clean it up.
  • I will begin praying with others in this church, in formal groups and ad hoc groups, as God leads me.
  • I will begin praying for spiritual renewal in my life, my family and my church.
