40 DAYS OF PRAYER

Part 2 – Obstacles to Prayer
Selected Scriptures

Tim Homa, Campus Pastor Richmond/Rosenberg

1. FIRST, TO CLEAR THE WAY TO ANSWERED PRAYERS WE MUST DEAL WITH THE UNCONFESSED SIN IN OUR LIVES.

  • Isaiah 59: 1-2 Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor His ear to dull to hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden His face from you so that He will not hear.
  • Matthew 5:23-24 Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.
  • Psalm 66:18 If I had cherished sin in my heart, The Lord would not have listened.
  • Psalm 139:23-24 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.
  • 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

2. SECONDLY, TO CLEAR THE WAY TO ANSWERED PRAYERS IN OUR LIVES WE MUST DEAL WITH THE ISSUE OF DOUBT.

  • James 1:5-7 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord
  • Mark 11:22-25  And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.” ESV

3. THIRD, TO CLEAR THE WAY TO ANSWERED PRAYERS WE MUST BE RIGHT IN OUR RELATIONSHIPS.

  • 1 Peter 3:7 Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.
  • R. A. Torrey, How To Pray, “In many a case, the prayers of husbands are hindered because of their failures.  On the other hand, it is also doubtless true that the prayers of wives are hindered because of their failure of duty toward their husband.  If husbands and wives would diligently seek to find the cause of their unanswered prayers, they would often find it in their relations with one another.”
  • Matthew 6:14-15 If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.
  • Mark 11:25 But when you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins, too.
