1. THE FIRST COMING OF THE MESSIAH BROUGHT US INTO RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD.

A. Isaiah 8:22  Then they will look toward the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom, and they will be thrust into utter darkness.

B. Isaiah 9:1-2  Nevertheless, that time of darkness and despair will not go on forever. The land of Zebulun and Naphtali will be humbled, but there will be a time in the future when Galilee of the Gentiles, which lies along the road that runs between the Jordan and the sea, will be filled with Glory.  2 The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine.  (NLT)

C. Matthew 4:13-17  Jesus went first to Nazareth, then left there and moved to Capernaum, beside the Sea of Galilee, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali.  14 This fulfilled what God said through the prophet Isaiah: 15 “In the land of Zebulun and of Naphtali, beside the sea, beyond the Jordan River, in Galilee where so many Gentiles live,  16 the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light. And for those who lived in the land where death casts its shadow, a light has shined.”  (NLT)

D. Jesus brought light for those in darkness.

John 1:4  In Him (Jesus) was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

E. Jesus brought joy to those in despair.

Isaiah 9:3  You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as warriors rejoice when dividing the plunder.

F. Jesus brought freedom to those who are oppressed.

1. Isaiah 9: 4  For as in the day of Midian’s defeat, you have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor.

2. John 8:32, 36  And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you are free, indeed!

3. John 11:25-26  Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life.  He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;  26 and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.”  (NIV)

2. THE SECOND COMING OF THE MESSIAH WILL BRING AN END TO ALL PAIN AND SUFFERING.

A. Isaiah 9:7  His government and its peace will never end.  He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of His ancestor David for all eternity.  The passionate commitment of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!  (NLT)

B. Acts 1:10-11  Two angels suddenly stood among the disciples and said.  “Men of Galilee, why are you standing here staring into heaven?  Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go!”
