ANSWERED PRAYER: HOW TO GET WHAT YOU PRAY FOR

Part  4 – What To Do When God Is Silent
Luke 1:5-24

Dr. Mark S. Hartman, Lead Pastor

1. AN EXAMPLE OF GOD’S SILENCE IN THE PAST.

A. Luke 1:5-6  In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were upright in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commandments and regulations blamelessly.

B. Luke 1:7  But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren; and they were both well along in years.

C. Luke 1:12-13  When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. 13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John.”

2. GOD ALWAYS ANSWERS PRAYER BUT SOMETIMES WAIT IS HIS RESPONSE.

A. 1 John 5:14-15  This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us–whatever we ask–we know that we have what we asked of him.

B. When we pray in accordance to God’s Will He grants it then, but sometimes it isn’t delivered until later.

3. WHY DOES GOD SOMETIMES DELAY THE ANSWER?

A. To give us something better than we asked for.

Matthew 11:11  Truly, of all men ever born, none shines more brightly than John the Baptist.

B. To accomplish something humanly impossible without divine intervention.

2 Chronicles 16:9  For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.

C. To complete His purpose in the problem.

Romans 8:28  And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.

D. To allow us to realize how important the request really is to us.

4. WHAT TO DO WHEN GOD IS SILENT IN PRAYERS THAT ARE ACCORDING TO HIS WILL.

A. First, make sure you aren’t the reason for the silence.

B. Second, keep on praying until you get it.

1. Matthew 7:7-8  Keep on asking and it will be given to you; keep on seeking and you will find; keep on knocking and the door will be opened to you.  8 For everyone who keeps on asking receives; he who keeps on seeking finds; and to him who keeps on knocking, the door will be opened.

2. “I watched a stone cutter hammer away at a rock a hundred times without so much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the 101st blow, the rock is split in two. I know it was not the one blow that did it, but all the blows had gone before that gave no evidence of a difference.”  (Jacob Riis)

C. Third, keep praying until you get an assurance that you will get it, then start praising.

Romans 4:18-21  So, when God told Abraham that He would give him a son who would have many descendants and become a great nation, Abraham believed God even though such a promise just couldn’t come to pass! 19 And because his faith was strong, he didn’t worry about the fact that he was too old to be a father at the age of one hundred, and that Sarah his wife, at ninety, was also much too old to have a baby.  20 But Abraham never doubted. He believed God, for his faith and trust grew ever stronger, and he praised God for this blessing even before it happened.  21 He was completely sure that God was well able to do anything he promised.

D. Fourth, keep praying until you get an assurance from God that you are not going to get it, then still thank Him.
