1. We show the love of God to others by being united.

  • Philippians 2:1-2 (ESV)  So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.
  • We can be united by being like Christ and living for His mission.
  • Galatians 3:27-28  For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

2. We show the love of God to others by putting away selfishness and pursuing selflessness.

  • Philippians 2:3-4 (ESV)  Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
  • We can pursue selflessness by practicing humility.
  • Ephesians 4:1-3 (ESV)  I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

3. We show the love of God to others by following Jesus and imitating His lifestyle.

  • Philippians 2:5-8 (ESV)  Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
  • Our hearts and culture tell us that the best way to live and be successful is by fighting for what we want, but our God and His Word teach us that the way to live is by serving others.
  • Galatians 5:13 (ESV)  For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

4. We show the love of God to others by believing the gospel and centering our lives around it.

  • Philippians 2:9-11 (ESV)  Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

A. The gospel reminds us that we can’t be arrogant.

B. The gospel also reminds us that we don’t have to be insecure.

C. True love for others starts with humbling ourselves before Jesus Christ the Lord.

No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.
