Part 3 – The Antichrist’s Rise to Power
(2 Thessalonians 2:9-12)

April 21-22, 2018
Dr. Mark S. Hartman, Lead Pastor

1. INTRODUCTION

2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, 10 and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12 and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness. (NIV)

2. A PERSPECTIVE OF THE LAST DAYS EVENTS.

A. The Bible describes 6 major events that are tied to the Second Coming of Christ:

1. The world will grow progressively worse. (Matthew 24)

2. The true followers of Jesus Christ will be raptured away and will experience our own judgement for believers called The Judgement Seat of Christ. (Luke 12:40; 2 Peter 3:3-10; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Romans 14:10-12; 2 Corinthians 5:10; 1 John 3:2-3; Revelation 19:7-9 with Matthew 26:27-29.)

3. There will be 7 years of tribulation in which the world will see the emergence of a great world leader the Bible calls the antichrist. (Daniel 7,8,9,11; Revelation 6-19; 2 Thessalonians 2, 1 John 2:18)

4. At the end of the 7 years, Christ will return, defeat the antichrist at the Battle of Armageddon and all of Israel with accept Jesus as the Messiah. (Zachariah 12-14 with Romans 11:26-31; Isaiah 11:4; Joel 3:1-19; Matthew 24:26-31; 2 Thessalonians 2, Revelation 1:7; Revelation 16:13-16; 14:18-20; Revelation 19)

5. Christ will set up a 1000 year reign on this earth called the Millennial Reign of Christ. At the end of the thousand years, there will be the Great White Throne Judgment where all who do not know Christ will be judged. (Luke 22:29-30; Matthew 19: 28-29; Isaiah 2:2-4, Isaiah 3:4; 11:6-9; 65:21-26; Micah 4:1-3; Revelation 19, 20)

6. There will be a New Heaven and a New Earth and time shall be no More. (Revelation 21-22)

3. THE Antichrist’S POWER emerges. (2 Thessalonians 2:9-10)

A. 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10a The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, 10 and in every sort of evil… (NIV)

MIRACLES are supernatural events. SIGNS always point to the person who performs them. WONDERS describes the astonishing results of them. All of these, which will come from the antichrist, are called counterfeit – not because they are fake but because they lead people to false conclusions about who the antichrist is.

B. Revelation 13:3b-4 The whole world was astonished and followed the beast (antichrist). 4 Men worshiped the dragon (Satin) because he had given authority to the beast (antichrist), and they also worshiped the beast and asked, “Who is like the beast? Who can make war against him?”

C. Revelation 13:11-12 Then I saw another beast (false prophet), coming out of the earth. 12 He …made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed.

D. Satan will be allowed to give to the antichrist 3 things:

1. “Power.”

2. “A throne.”

3. “Great authority.”

4. THERE WILL BE MANY WHO WILL BE LOST DURING THE TRIBULATION PERIOD. (2 Thessalonians 2:10-12)

A. 2 Thessalonians 2:10b-12 They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12 and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness. (NIV)

B. Romans 10:9 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (NIV)

C. Matthew 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing. (Jesus) (NIV)

D. 2 Thessalonians 2:11-12 For this reason (because they had willfully rejected God) God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12 and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness. (NIV)

E. “The story of Pharaoh is a grim reminder that God will judicially harden the hearts of those who persist in hardening their hearts against the truth. Because Pharaoh hardened his heart, God hardened Pharaoh’s heart, fixing him in a path from which he could never return.” (John MacArthur, commentary on 2 Thessalonians 2)

5. HOW DOES ALL OF THIS FIT INTO GOD’S PLAN?

A. This is Satan’s last desperate attempt to destroy the work of God through the introduction of Satan’s own Messiah, the antichrist and his attempt to lead the entire world in rebellion against God.

B. This is God’s final attempt to bring as many people to Himself as possible.

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Ezekiel 33:11 Say to them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways!’ (NIV)

C. The Great Tribulation is the final judgment of God on the earth against the sin and wickedness mankind.

6. CONCLUSION

Daniel 8:25 … When they feel secure, he (antichrist) will destroy many and take his stand against the Prince of princes (Jesus). Yet he will be destroyed, but not by human power.
