INTRODUCTION

A. Philippians 1:6 …Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

B. Philippians 1:1-2 Paul and Timothy, bond-servants of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, including the pastors and deacons: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

C. The word “saint” means a person called out and set apart by God. The Bible says that all Christ followers are saints.

1. GOD OFTENTIMES CLOSES ONE DOOR BECAUSE HE WANTS TO OPEN A BETTER DOOR. (Acts 16:6-8)

A. Acts 16:6-8 Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia. 7 When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to. 8 So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas. (NIV)

B. God closed a door so God could open a better door. He may be doing that in your life right now.

C. Proverbs 16:9 In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps. (NIV)

D. Sometimes there is a time of darkness before God turns on the light. Don’t panic in the darkness. The light is coming.

E. Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (NIV)

2. BEING FAITHFUL TO GOD DOES NOT ELIMINATE DIFFICULTIES FROM COMING TO YOUR LIFE.

Romans 8:28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. (NLT)

3. A POSITIVE ATTITUDE IN HARD TIMES CAN RESULT IN A POWERFUL IMPACT WHEN GOD IS INVOLVED.

A. Acts 16:25-26 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody’s chains came loose. (NIV)

B. Acts 16:27-30 The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!” 29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” (NIV)

4. THERE ARE FIVE BASIC KEYS TO DEVELOPING A POSITIVE ATTITUDE IN TOUGH TIMES.

A. First, believe that God loves you and will meet your need.

Jeremiah 31:3 I have loved you with an everlasting love. Therefore, with loving kindness I have drawn you to Myself. (God)

B. Second, get in control of your thinking.

– 1. Proverbs 4:23 Be careful how you think. Your life is shaped by your thoughts.

– 2. What we allow our minds to dwell on, actually begins to control and change us either for the good or for our harm.

– 3. Ephesians 4:22-23 …throw off your former way of life, which is rotten through and through, full of lust and deception. 23 Instead, there must be a spiritual renewal of your thoughts and attitudes.

– 4. Romans 12:2 Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

C. Third, use smaller problems as a way to get you ready for bigger ones.

D. Fourth, allow your mistakes to become your friends.

Treat failure as a step toward success and move on.

E. Allow God to fill your heart with peace and wait for Him to do the “what and when” that only God can do.
