1 Corinthians 13:1-2If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.2 And if I have the gift of prophecy and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.
1. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO LOVE ANOTHER PERSON?
A. Love is a choice, not an emotion.
Colossians 3:14And over all these virtues, put on love, which binds them all together…
B. Love is an action.
I John 3:18Let us not love (just) with words or tongue, but with actions and truth.
C. Love is a guide.
Colossians 3:14Most of all, let love guide your life. (TLB)
2. FOUR PRINCIPLES WHICH ALLOW US TO BETTER ENJOY THE PEOPLE IN OUR LIVES.
A. Principle # 1 – Remember the Best and Forget The Rest.(Philippians 1:3)
Philippians1:3I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, …
B. Principle # 2 – Habitually Pray Good Things For Others In Your Life.(Philippians 1:4)
1. Philippians 1:4…always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all,
2. Regular prayers for others in your life will do two things:
a. Prayer will change them.
Matthew 6:6-8 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. (Jesus)
b. Prayer will change you.
Job 42:10 After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD made him prosperous again and gave him twice as much as he had before. (NIV)
C. Principle # 3 – Recognize That God Is At Work In Your Friend’s Life, So Be Patient.(Philippians 1:6)
1. What Paul is actually saying is that what God starts, God finishes.
2. Romans 8:29For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the first-born among many brethren;
D. Principle # 4 – Openly Express Your Appreciation To Others In Your Life (Philippians 1:3, 7-8)
Philippians 1:3; 7-8 I thank my God in all my remembrance of you… 7 It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart; for whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me.8 God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. (NIV)
