THE ATTITUDE FACTOR

Part 3 – How To Be Happy No Matter What
Philippians 1:12-26

January 24, 2021
Dr. Mark S. Hartman, Lead Pastor

INTRODUCTION

The word joy means “a confident assurance in the midst of a storm that says everything will be ok because of Christ.”

1. BASIC No. 1 – CHOOSE TO LOOK FOR THE GOOD IN SPITE OF THE BAD.  (Philippians 1:12)

A. The issue that determines our happiness is not so much what happens to us as it is how we interpret what happens to us.

B. Philippians 1:18  I rejoice, and I will continue to rejoice.

C. Philippians 1:12  Now I want you to know, brethren, that my circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel, (NASB)

D. How can Paul staying in prison for four years actually be beneficial?

1. Because of Paul’s pain, people who would never have heard of Jesus were hearing of Him.  (Philippians 1:13)

Philippians 1:13  so that my imprisonment in the cause of Christ has become well known throughout the whole praetorian guard and to everyone else…

2. Because Paul was being courageous, others were following his lead.

Philippians 1:14   …and that most of the brethren, trusting in the Lord because of my imprisonment, have far more courage to speak the word of God without fear.

3. Because Paul was in prison, we have a large section of the New Testament.

E. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18  For our present troubles are quite small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us an immeasurably great glory that will last forever! 18 So we don’t look at the troubles we can see right now; rather, we look forward to what we have not yet seen.  For the troubles we see will soon be over, but the joys to come will last forever.

F. When we realize that God is in control and has a greater purpose behind our problems and we choose to focus on that perspective, even when we do not know the purpose, it changes everything.

2. BASIC NO. 2 – DRAW FROM THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT WITHIN YOU.   (Philippians 1:19)

A. Philippians 1:19  For I know that this shall turn out for my deliverance through your prayers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

B. Zechariah 4:6  ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty.

C. Psalm 62:1-2  My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from Him.  2 He alone is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress; I will never be shaken.

D. Isaiah 30:15  For the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, says: “Only in returning to Me and waiting for Me will you be saved; in quietness and confidence is your strength…”  (TLB)

E. The strength of God is evident in a quiet confidence that God gives to your heart.

3. BASIC NO. 3 – LIVE FOR A PURPOSE GREATER THAN YOURSELF.  (Philippians 1:20-26)

A. Philippians 1:15-18  Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ even from envy and strife, but some also from good will; 16 the latter do it out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel; 17 the former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, rather than from pure motives, thinking to cause me distress in my imprisonment. 18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and in this I rejoice, yes, and I will rejoice.

B. Philippians 1:18  But, what does it matter?  The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached.  And because of this I am happy.

C. Paul chose to focus on what was the most important thing and ignore the rest.

D. Keep your eyes on what really matters and everything else that threatens to steal your joy, choose to minimize.

E. Philippians 1:20-26  …that with all boldness, Christ shall even now, as always, be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. 21 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.  22 But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which to choose. 23 But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better; 24 yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake. 25 And convinced of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy in the faith, 26 so that your proud confidence in me may abound in Christ Jesus through my coming to you again.

F. Jesus first; Others second; Self third.
