Philippians 1:27-30  Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.  Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel 28 without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you.  This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved—and that by God.  29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him, 30 since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.

1. If you stand for God, you should expect opposition.

A. Philippians 1:28  without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you…

B. 2 Timothy 3:12  In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

C. 1 Peter 4:12  Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.

2. When we are opposed, we can either react in the flesh or respond in the Spirit.

A. Take the posture of humility and examine your own heart.

1. 1 Peter 4:15 If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler.

2. Psalm 139:23-24 Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.  24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

3. Proverbs 28:13  He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion.

B. Refuse to retaliate but pray for their blessing.

Romans 12:14, 17,19  Bless those who persecute you; bless and curse not.  17 Never pay back evil for evil to anyone…  19 Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.

C. Do not give into fear but stand firm for what is right no matter the cost.

1. Philippians 1:28  without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you.

2. Philippians 1:27b  Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel.

3. I Corinthians 16:13  Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.

4. Psalm 18:2  The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

3. Suffering for Christ is a gift of God’s grace.

Philippians 1:29  For it has been granted (graced) to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him.

A. Suffering for Christ reassures us that we are on the right side with God.

Philippians 1:28  …without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you.  This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved—and that by God.

B. Suffering for Christ unites us closely to the life of Christ.

Philippians 3:10  I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.

C. Suffering for Christ strengthens the church and advances our mission.

Philippians 1:14  And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear.

D. Suffering for Christ leads to everlasting joy, unending glory, and eternal reward.

1. 1 Peter 4:12-14 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.  13 But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.  14 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.

2. 2 Timothy 2:12  If we endure hardship, we will reign with him. If we deny him, he will deny us.

3. Matthew 5:10-12  Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  11 Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.  12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
