Dr. Mark S. Hartman, Lead Pastor

1. WHAT IT MEANS TO LIVE IN UNITY WITH OTHERS.  (Philippians 2:1-2)

A. Philippians 2:1-2  If therefore there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, 2 make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.

B. For Christ followers to love each other and work together means a great deal to God.

1. John 17:20-21   I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me because of their testimony.  21 My prayer for all of them (Sugar Creek) is that they will be one, just as You and I are one, Father—that just as You are in Me and I am in You, so they will be in Us, and the world will believe You sent Me.

2. Our unity – our love and understanding for each other convinces the world around us that Christianity has something to offer.

3. Look up “Sugar Land 95” and read the story.

4. Standing for each other – caring about each other – is what Jesus and Paul are talking about when they talk about unity and being one.

John 17:22-23  I have given them the glory You gave Me, so that they may be one, as We are— 23 I in them and You in Me, all being perfected into one. Then the world will know that You sent Me and will understand that You love them as much as You love Me.

5. Our unity with and love for one another means everything to the reputation of God in this world.  Brothers and sisters of the family of God, from all nations, languages and shades of skin united in Christ shows the world that Jesus is for real.  If we don’t do it, we will have damaged the Name of Christ to the lost who are watching us.

C. God tells us what He wants for us:

1. We are like minded.

2. We love each other.

3. We have the same purpose.

Philippians 1:27  Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ; so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel.

2. PAUL GIVES US FOUR THINGS WE MUST DO TO BUILD A DEEP UNITY AMONG US.

A. Think about others and not just ourselves.  (Philippians 2:3)

Philippians 2:3   Do nothing from selfishness…

B. Be humble not prideful.  (Philippians 2:3)

1. Philippians 2:3  Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit,

2. “Temper gets us into trouble but pride keeps us there.”  (Mark Twain)

3. James 4:6, 10   But God gives us more grace.  That is why Scripture says:  ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’  10  Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.

C. Build each other up.  (Philippians 2:3)

Philippians 2:3  Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as better than himself.

D. Be others centered.  (Philippians 2:4)

Philippians 2:4    …do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others…
