(Daniel 5)

A. Galatians 6:7  Don’t be misled.  Remember that you can’t ignore God and get away with it.  You will always reap what you sow! (NLT)

B. How do we step over the line and bring God’s discipline?

1. By being arrogant.

James 4:14  …What is your life?  You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

2. By forgetting that God is in charge.  (Daniel 5:23)

a. Daniel 5:23  …you did not honor the God who holds in His hand your life and all your ways.

b. 1 Samuel 2:6-7  The LORD brings death and makes alive; He brings down to the grave and raises up. 7 The LORD sends poverty and wealth; He humbles, and He exalts.

c. Psalms 75:6-7  For promotion come neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south, but God is the judge: He puts down one and sets up another.

3. By living for other gods in your life.  (Daniel 5:4)

Daniel 5:4  As they drank the wine, they praised the gods of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone.

A. Daniel 5:5-6  Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall, near the lampstand in the royal palace.  The king watched the hand as it wrote.  6 His face turned pale, and he was so frightened that his knees knocked together, and his legs gave way.

B. Daniel 5:25-28  This is the inscription that was written: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN  26 This is what these words mean: Mene: God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end.  27 Tekel: You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.  28 Peres: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.

C. Romans 2:4-8  Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness leads you toward repentance?   5 But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed.   6  God will give to each person according to what he has done.  7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.  8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.

D. God’s correction in our life, causing us to be caught, causing us to suffer for doing wrong, is actually an expression of God’s grace and love for us. He is trying to rescue us, not destroy us.
