1. GIVING TO GOD INVOLVES EVERYONE INCLUDING ME.
A. 1 Corinthians 16:1-2 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do. 2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.
B. This phrase includes everyone and excludes no one.
2. GIVING TO GOD IS TO BE CONSISTENT.
A. 1 Corinthians 16:2 On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. (NIV)
B. The Bible teaches that our giving is to be habitual.
3. GIVING INVOLVES A PERCENTAGE OF WHAT WE HAVE RECEIVED.
A. 1 Corinthians 16:2 On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made.
B. The Greek phrase translated “in keeping with his income” means proportionate which can be understood as a percentage.
C. Deuteronomy 14:23 …The purpose of tithing is to teach you always to put God first in your lives. (TLB)
D. Luke 11:42 Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.
E. The Bible does clearly teach that the tithe is a minimum we should give, not a maximum.
4. THE BIBLE TEACHES WHERE WE ARE TO GIVE OUR TITHE.
A. 1 Corinthians 16:2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.
B. We are to lay aside our offering to the Lord’s work during the week and then on the first day of the week bring it to the common treasury of the church so that it may be used for the Lord’s work.
5. GOD RESPONDS TO OUR GIVING BY BLESSING US IN RETURN.
A. 2 Corinthians 9:6, 8 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
B. The Bible teaches that God will give back to us to the degree that we give to Him.
C. Matthew 6:19-21 Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
