THE DAY DEATH DIED
Hebrews 2:14-15

April 4, 2021 – Easter Sunday

INTRODUCTION

Hebrews 2:14-15  Since the children have flesh and blood, He (Jesus) too shared in their humanity so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death – that is, the devil – 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. (NIV)

1. DEATH CLAIMED JESUS JUST AS IT DOES ALL OF US.

A. The cross had not beaten Jesus, but by the cross Jesus had destroyed forever Satan and his hosts.

Colossians 2:15  And having disarmed the powers and authorities, Jesus made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

B. Revelation 1:17-18 …I am the First and the Last. 18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hell.

C. Hebrews 2:14-15 Since the children have flesh and blood, Jesus too shared in their humanity so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death – that is, the devil – 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. (NIV)

D. John 14:6  Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”  (NIV)

2. ON THE CROSS, JESUS TOOK THE STING OF DEATH.

A. 1 Corinthians 15:55-56  Where, O death, is your victory?  Where, O death, is your sting?  56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. (NIV)

B. John 5:24  Whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. (Jesus)

C. John 11:25-26  …I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;  26 and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.  (NIV)

3. THE RESURRECTION IS PROOF THAT THERE IS A GOD IN CONTROL.

So, you think you want to give up?  You are tempted to live a life ruled by “eat, drink and be merry because tomorrow you die?”  Think again.  There is an eternal life follows death.  How do we know?  Jesus arose from dead.  Because He lives, you can face tomorrow.  Because He lives, all fear is gone;  Because I know He holds the future, And life is worth the living, Just because He lives!  (1 Corinthians 15)
