FEAR – WEEK ONE
Peace in a Pressured World Devotional Guide

Fear can be defined as a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined. It is the feeling or condition of being afraid. Have you ever been gripped by fear? Your body can literally feel like it is in a vise. Every day activities can seem overwhelming. Do you lose sleep over fearful thoughts such as, What if my child makes a wrong decision? What will happen with all the troubles facing our country? What if I lose my job? Or, What if my loved one is diagnosed with a terminal illness?

For many years, similar fears threatened to immobilize me. And to be honest, some of the situations I feared most actually happened. Overcoming my fear was a process. I was only able to survive fear-filled days by believing and standing on the promises found in God’s Word. As a Christ-follower, I learned that quoting Scripture was just not enough. I had to believe that God’s promises applied to me as His child. I had to believe that God is trustworthy, credible, all sufficient, and loving.

As a Christ-follower, I learned that quoting Scripture was just not enough. I had to believe that God’s promises applied to me as His child.

Several years ago my son was diagnosed with a very rare disease for which there is no cure. This condition causes almost continuous severe muscle spasms and excruciating pain. I vividly recall the night that he was in so much agony that he called out to God, Father help me. I knelt beside his bed and prayed. As I stood, he stopped breathing and went limp. I called out to my husband for help. The scene that unfolded was surreal as I watched him doing CPR on our only son. Fear wanted to choke me and squeeze the breath from me. But my heart knew that God is Sovereign and in control. My trust in the Lord overcame the fear my mind wanted to give into. As we sped down the road following the ambulance carrying our son to the hospital, these words from Psalm 23 helped to calm the storm in which we found ourselves. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. (Psalm 23:4) He was with us! We are so grateful that God chose to allow our son to live.

In moments of paralyzing fear, we can rely on God’s Word, because His Word is the Truth! We have a Savior who daily bears our burdens (Psalm 68:19) and will never leave or forsake us, ever! (Hebrews 13:5) Jesus is the one who frees us from fear, empowers us, and loves us. We don’t have to fear the storms. In the midst of every circumstance that threatens God’s peace within us, we have an Anchor, and the Anchor holds!  [Pam Cummings, Sugar Creek Baptist Church Member]

REMEMBER

As you read a verse or a passage, ask and answer the following four questions.

  1. What does the passage say about God?
  2. What does the passage say about Man?
  3. Are there any examples to follow?
  4. Are there any commands to obey or a sin to avoid?

After each day’s Scripture reading you’ll notice a section that begins with “I Will….” That’s included to help you with Question 4 as you consider your personal steps of obedience based on what you’ve read and learned. Then pray your commitment back to God.
