INTRODUCTION

“It’s not about what someone can do for you, it’s who and what the two of you can become in each other’s presence … The notion of doing nothing but spending time in each other’s company has, in a way, become a lost art. People are so eager to maximize efficiency of relationships that they have lost touch with what it is to be a friend.”  (Dr. Ronald Sharp)

1. A FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD IS ACTUALLY POSSIBLE.

A. Hosea 6:6  I don’t want your sacrifices—I want your love; I don’t want your offerings—I want you to know Me!
B. James 4:8  Draw close to God, and God will draw close to you.

2. HOW WE BEGIN A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD.

  • Romans 3:23  For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. (NLT2)
  • “We live with a God shaped hole in our hearts.”  (Blaise Pascal)
  • Romans 6:23  For the wages (results) of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.  (NLT2)
  • Ephesians 2:8-9  God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. (NLT2)
  • Romans 5:8  But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. (NLT2)
  • 1 Timothy 2:5  Jesus Christ is the bridge between God and man.
  • Romans 5:1  Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ…
  • Romans 5:11  Now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.
  • Romans 10:9  If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (NLT)

– 1. Allow Jesus to become Lord of your life.
– 2. Commit yourself to the risen Jesus.

3. Make knowing God YOUR GREATEST priority.

A. Time spent together is a key predictor of friendship closeness as long as it is the right kind of time.  Just hanging out together without an agenda, produces the greatest friendships.
B. John 17:3  This is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and the One You have sent – Jesus.

4. Slow down and be quiet before him.

A. Psalm 46:10  Be still, and know that I am God. (NIV)
B. Psalm 25:14  Friendship with the Lord is reserved for those who reverence Him.  With them He shares the secrets of His covenant.

5. TRUST GOD IN THE GOOD AND NOT SO GOOD TIMES.

A. Philippians 4:6-7  Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (NIV)
B. 1 Peter 5:6-7  Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you. (NIV)
