1. SELFISHNESS BREAKS RELATIONSHIPS BY MAKING IT ONLY ABOUT US.

A. James 4:1-2  What causes fights and quarrels?  Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?  2 You want something but you don’t get it.

B. Proverbs 28:25 Selfishness only causes trouble.

C. If selfishness destroys relationships, then self-lessness is the cure.

D. Philippians 2:4  Look out for one another’s interests not just your own.  Selflessness transforms a relationship.

E. Galatians 6:7-8  Don’t be misled: No one makes a fool of God. What a person plants, he will harvest. The person who plants selfishness, ignoring the needs of others—ignoring God!— 8 harvests a crop of weeds. All he’ll have to show for his life is weeds!  But the one who plants in response to God, letting God’s Spirit do the growth work in him, harvests a crop of real life, eternal life. (MSG)

2. PRIDE WORKS TO KEEP BROKEN RELATIONSHIPS STAY BROKEN.

A. Philippians 2:3  Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit

B. Pride is the act of showing oneself to be above another, to become inflated with oneself or one’s opinion.

C. Mark Twain was right when he said, “Temper gets us into trouble, but pride keeps us there.”

1. Proverbs 16:18  Pride will destroy a person:  a proud attitude leads to ruin.  (NCV)

2. Proverbs 11:2  Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.  (NLT)

3. Proverbs 18:12  Before his downfall a man’s heart is proud, but humility comes before honor.  (NIV)

D. James 4:6, 10  But God gives us more grace.  That is why Scripture says:  ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’  10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.

E. He reduces His blessings in our life.  He reduces His guidance and His strengthening until our pride has been changed.  He removes His hand of protection and His hand of provision.

F. Humility is the antidote to pride.

G. 1 Peter 3:8  Live in harmony, be sympathetic, love each other, have compassion, be humble.

H. James 4:6, 10  But God gives us more grace.  That is why Scripture says:  ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’  10  Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.

I. Gentleness comes when in humility we recognize God’s grace in our lives, and we decide to give it to others as He gave it to us.

3. RESENTMENT SABOTAGES ANY ATTEMPT TO FIX BROKEN RELATIONSHIPS.

A. Job 5:2  To worry yourself to death with resentment is a foolish, senseless thing to do.  (TEV)

B. Psalm 73:21-22  Since my heart was embittered and my soul deeply wounded, I was stupid and could not understand.  (NAB)

C. Hebrews 12:15  Look after each other so that not one of you will fail to find God’s best blessings. Watch out that no bitterness takes root among you, for as it springs up it causes deep trouble, hurting many in their spiritual lives.  (TLB)

D. Colossians 3:13 You must make allowance for each other’s faults and forgive the person who offends you.  Remember the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.  (NLT)
