Galatians: How to Live in Freedom
GALATIANS: HOW TO LIVE IN FREEDOM

Part 10 – You Can Be Like Jesus
Galatians 5:16-26

Dr. Mark S. Hartman, Lead Pastor

1. GOD LOVES US JUST AS WE ARE. BUT HE LOVES US TOO MUCH TO KEEP US AS WE ARE.

A. The evidence of Christ in you is the change He is forming in your life.

B. At Sugar Creek, the goal of our church is to love and lead all people to Life Change in Christ.

C. Galatians 4:19  My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you…

God’s goal for your life is not just to believe in Jesus, but to become like Jesus.

D. Romans 8:29  For those God foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of His Son, that Christ might be the firstborn among many brothers (and sisters). (NIV)

For every person who knows Jesus as Savior, God has predetermined in a way that cannot be altered that one day you will be just like Jesus.

2. GOD CHANGES OUR BEHAVIOR BY FIRST CHANGING OUR ATTITUDES.

A. Galatians 5: 19-21  The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.  I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

B. Galatians 5:22-23  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control.

C. Notice that the first list was mostly actions.  They were plural in nature because we can pick and choose our sins.  But the second list is Christ-like attitudes of a changed heart that together are the fruit (the result) of the work of the Holy Spirit in us.

3. THE POWER FOR CHANGE COMES FROM THE HOLY SPIRIT.

A. God does not leave it up to us to change ourselves, He has given us His own Spirit.

B. Galatians 5:16  So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

C. We walk in the Spirit by deciding that we love God and we truly want to please Him.

D. We walk in the Spirit when we habitually take in God’s Word.

1. John 15:7-8  If you remain in Me and My Words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.  8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

2. Religion says work harder, do this list of rules and regulations.  Jesus says stay close to Me.

E. We walk in the Spirit when we yield control to obey God’s Word.

1. Galatians 5:17  For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh.  They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.

2. Jeremiah 17:9  The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.

3. Don’t follow your heart, follow Jesus.

F. We walk in the Spirit when we see every aspect of life, good or not so good, as a part of our transformation.

Romans 8:28  And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.

G. Becoming like Jesus is a lifelong process.

1. 2 Corinthians 3:18  And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the Glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.  For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

2. 1 John 3:2   Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but He has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He really is.  (NLT)
