Part 7 – Jesus: God’s Great Champion (Galatians 3:15-29)
October 13, 2019 Dr. Mark S. Hartman, Lead Pastor
1. JESUS IS GOD’S GREAT CHAMPION BECAUSE HE IS THE FULFILLMENT OF GOD’S PROMISE TO BLESS THE WHOLE WORLD.
A. Galatians 3:15-16 Brothers, let me take an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established, so it is in this case. 16 The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. The Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people, but “and to your seed,” meaning one person, who is Christ.
B. Genesis 12:3 I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” (NKJV)
C. Genesis 22:18 …through your seed all the nations on the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed Me.
2. JESUS IS GOD’S GREAT CHAMPION BECAUSE HE HAS BROUGHT OUR HEAVENLY FATHER, AND US TOGETHER.
A. The Old Testament laws were intended to be a temporary guardian. Jesus fulfilled and completed the purpose that the law was given to accomplish. Now, we are under Christ through faith.
B. Galatians 3:19; 23-24 Why, then, was the law given? It was given alongside the promise (to Abraham) to show people their sins. 23 Before the way of faith in Christ was available to us, we were placed under guard by the law. We were kept in protective custody, so to speak, until the way of faith was revealed. 24 Let me put it another way. The law was our guardian until Christ came; it protected us until we could be made right with God through faith. 25 And now that the way of faith has come, we no longer need the law as our guardian.
C. Galatians 3:19What, then, was the purpose of the law? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed (the Messiah) to whom the promise referred had come. (NIV)
D. Here is what Paul is explaining to us:
1. God gave Abraham a promise to be fulfilled by the Messiah.
2. 430 years later God gave the law to be a temporary guardian to help define right & wrong until the Messiah arrived.
3. Jesus, the Messiah, came as the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham. We are now saved by faith in Christ alone.
E. 1 Timothy 2:5-6For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself as a ransom for all people—the testimony given in its proper time.
F. A mediator is someone who puts one hand in the hand of one person and his other hand in the hand of the other person and brings the two together.
3. JESUS IS GOD’S GREAT CHAMPION BECAUSE HE ALONE HAS MADE US ALL ONE FAMILY OF GOD.
A. Galatians 3:26-29 For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on the character of Christ, like putting on new clothes. 28 There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God’s promise to Abraham belongs to you. (NLT)
B. Jesus has brought us together into a new united community called the Family of God.
C. John 1:12 But as many as received Jesus, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name. (NKJV)
D. Galatians 3:27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
E. Galatians 3:28 There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus. (NLT)
In God’s eyes, Jews and Gentiles are equal. Slaves and free are equal. Male and female are equal.
