INTRODUCTION

Ephesians 4:30-32  Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.  31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.  32 Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.  (NASB)

1. THE SIX-STEP PATHWAY TO BITTERNESS.  (Ephesians 4:31)

Ephesians 4:31  Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.

1. The first step to bitterness is anger.

a. Orge meant a righteous indignation.  The Bible says it is okay to have anger (orge) as long as we limit its intensity and duration.

b. Parorgismos is a simmering anger.

c. Thumos is a violent, explosive anger.

2. The second step is clamor.

The word clamor means to complain, demand or gripe.

3. The third step is slander.

Slander is speaking a lie or even a truth about someone with the intent of hurting or discrediting them.

4. The fourth step is bitterness itself.

5. The fifth step is wrath.

6. The sixth step is malice.

2. THE CONSEQUENCES OF BITTERNESS.

A. There are emotional and mental consequences to bitterness.

“I’ve had a few arguments with people, but I never carry a grudge.  Why?  Because while I’m carrying a grudge, they’re out dancing.”  (Anonymous)

B. Revenge damages us spiritually

1. Matthew 6:14-15  For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:  but if you forgive not others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

2. Ephesians 4:30-32  Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

3. THERE IS A ROAD BACK FROM BITTERNESS.  (Ephesians 4:31-32)

A. Choose to stop and get back on the road back to health.

1. We can’t feel our way into doing.  We have to do our way into feeling.

2. Ephesians 4:31  Let all bitterness…be put away from you.

B. Choose to be kind to others even when you don’t want to be.

Ephesians 4:32  Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.  (NASB)

C. Choose to be tenderhearted.

Ephesians 4:32  Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.   (NASB)
