Introduction

Genesis 2:18, 21-23   Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.”  21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep.  While the man slept, the LORD God took out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opening.  22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man.  23 At last!” the man exclaimed.  “This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh!  She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken from ‘man.’”  (NLT2)

1. THE GREATEST GIFT YOU CAN GIVE YOUR SPOUSE IS TO LOVE GOD AND PUT HIM FIRST.

A. John 14:15  If you love Me you do what I tell you to do. (Jesus)

B. The Bible was the first in recorded history to command men to be loving and respectful toward their wives.

C. In Christianity, God told men, don’t you dare mistreat your wife because if you do, I will not answer your prayers.

1 Peter 3:7  In the same way, you husbands must give honor to your wives.  Treat your wife with understanding as you live together. …She is your equal partner in God’s gift of new life.  Treat her as you should so your prayers will not be hindered.  (NLT)

2. THE GOAL OF MARRIAGE IS THE COMPLETION OF EACH OTHER (Genesis 1:18)

A. Genesis 2:18  I will make Adam a helper suitable for him.  (God)

1. Psalm 33:20  The Lord God is my helper.

2. In the Bible a helper is not someone subservient but someone who helps to complete.

3. The man and woman complete each other to together form a beautiful picture of what God intended marriage to produce.

B. To complete each other means that where one is weak, the other is strong and where the other lacks, the first supplies the need.

C. Part of the marriage process is to so humble us that we can say, “I need the strengths you possess.  I cannot be what I need to be without you.”

3. HOW DO WE REACH THE INTIMACY OF COMPLETING EACH OTHER? (Genesis2:24-25)

Genesis 2:24-25  Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.  25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

A. Leave Your Parents. (v.24)

B. Cleave to Your spouse.  (v. 24)

C. Become One Flesh.  ( v.  24)

Becoming one flesh means more than physical.  It means an inseparable union emotionally, psychologically and spiritually.  It is talking about unity.

D. Reach Genuine Intimacy.  (v. 25)

1. Genesis 2:25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

2. To be laid bare means to be totally exposed, totally transparent emotionally, mentally, all your strengths and weaknesses, inwardly and outwardly.  To be intimate and still not embarrassed.
