Philippians 3:12-21

Dr. Mark S. Hartman, Lead Pastor

Philippians 3:17  Join with others in following my example and take note of those who live according to the pattern we gave you.

1. BE HONEST ABOUT PAST FAILURES.  (Philippians 3:12-13)

A. Philippians 3:12-13   Not that I have already obtained it, or have already become perfect, but I press on in order that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. [13] Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead,

B. Successful people never stop growing.  They are always developing, expanding, learning.

C. We must periodically take a personal moral inventory of our life.

1. Lamentations 3:40  Let us examine our ways and test them.

2. Psalm 139:23-24  Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.  24 See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.

D. We must accept responsibility for our faults.

Proverbs 20:27  The Lord gave us a mind and a conscience.  We cannot hide from ourselves.

E. We ask God and others for forgiveness.

1. I John 1:9  If we freely admit that we have sinned we find God utterly reliable.  He forgives our sin and makes us thoroughly clean from all that is evil.

2. Isaiah 1:18  No matter how deep the stain of your sin is, I can take it out and make it clean as freshly fallen snow.

3. James 5:16  Admit your faults, to one another and pray for each other so that you may be healed.

2. LET GO OF THE PAST.  (Philippians 3:13)

A. Philippians 3:13  …one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind…

B. Isaiah 43:18-19  Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.  19 See I am doing a new thing!

C. To forget actually means that you stop letting it affect you; to control you; to manipulate you.

D. There are three things from the past of which we need to let go:

1. Our failures.

2. Our hurts.

3. Our successes.

“My philosophy is that one of the biggest enemies of future success is past success, because you become complacent…” (Charles Koch)

E. Luke 9:62  “Anyone who starts to plow and then keeps looking back is of no use for the Kingdom of God.” (Jesus)

3. FOCUS ON THE FUTURE.  (Philippians 3:13)

A. Philippians 3:13  Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead,…

B. I Corinthians 9:24  Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize?  Run in such a way as to win the prize.

C. 2 Corinthians 5:9  So we make our goal to please God.

D. Matthew 6:33  But seek (aim at and strive after) first of all God’s kingdom and His righteousness (His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given to you besides.  (AMP)

E. Philippians 3:14  I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

F. John 10:10  The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy.  My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. (NLT)

4. NEVER GIVE UP. (Philippians 3:14-16)

A. Philippians 3:14  I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

B. The great people in life are just ordinary people with extraordinary amount of determination.  They keep on keeping on.  They refuse to give up.

C. “My God-given talent is my ability to stick with something longer than anyone else.”  (Herschel Walker)

D. You are never doing wrong by doing right.

E. The key to keep going forward is to do the next right thing and then the next right thing and then the next right thing and leaving the results up to God.

F. 2 Timothy 4:7-8  I have fought the good fight,  I have finished the race,  I have kept the faith.  Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge will award to me on that day …
