1. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE CONTENTED?  (Philippians 4:11)

A. Philippians 4:11  Not that I speak from want; for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.

B. The word contentment means: “Needing no more than what one has right now in order to be satisfied.”

C. God does not mean that to be contented we are simply to accept the status quo.

D. Our contentment is to come in two areas:

1. We are to be contented with God’s leadership in our life.

2. We are to be contented with God’s provision in our life.

a. 1 Samuel 2:7  The Lord makes one poor and another rich;  he brings one down and lifts another up.

b. What God wants is our willingness to be contented with whatever He chooses to bless us.

c. I Timothy 6:6-8  Godliness with contentment is great gain.  7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.  8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.

E. Philippians 4:11-12  …For I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.  12 I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need.

2. Cultivate GRATITUDE.   (Philippians 4:10)

A. Philippians 4:10  But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly

B. Some of the things we need to be thankful for are the less-than-perfect gifts.

C. Many of things we should express gratitude for are the things we routinely take for granted.

D. The greatest enemy to gratitude is comparison.

3. LIMIT YOUR EXPECTATIONS.  (Philippians 4:11-12)

A. Philippians 4:11-12  Not that I speak from want; for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.  I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need.

B. The key to getting off the emotional roller coaster of circumstances is limiting our expectations of them.

4. DRAW ON CHRIST’S POWER.   (Philippians 4:13)

A. Philippians 4:13  I can do all things through Him (Christ) who strengthens me.

B. 2 Corinthians 12:9  And God has said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in your weakness.’

C. God is saying, if you will look to Me, I will be your sufficiency and your contentment no matter what you face.
