  • Our culture is constantly trying to redefine who we are.
  • An externality cannot determine your identity.
  • What you do cannot determine who you are.
  • There are four statements revealing our belief about who we are.
    • I can
    • I have
    • I like
    • I am
  • We cannot redefine our identity; we can only receive our identity.

Genesis 1:26-28  Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, the whole earth, and the creatures that crawl on the earth.  27 So God created man in his own image; he created him in the image of God; he created them male and female.  28 God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature that crawls on the earth.”

  • Genesis 3:1-5  Now the serpent was the most cunning of all the wild animals that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You can’t eat from any tree in the garden’?”  2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit from the trees in the garden.  3 But about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God said, ‘You must not eat it or touch it, or you will die.’”  4 “No! You will certainly not die,” the serpent said to the woman.  5 “In fact, God knows that when you eat it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
  • Sin carried out the greatest identity theft in history.
  • Our identity is revealed in the image of God, but is renewed in the image of Christ.
  • Three responses to Christ’s image in us . . .
  • Focus on Jesus, who is your life.

Colossians 3:1-4   So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.  2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.  3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.  4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

  • Abandon your old sinful identity.

Colossians 3:5-9  Therefore, put to death what belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry.  6 Because of these, God’s wrath is coming upon the disobedient, 7 and you once walked in these things when you were living in them.  8 But now, put away all the following: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth.  9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old self with its practices…

  • Live out your new identity in Christ.

Colossians 3:10-11  …and have put on the new self. You are being renewed in knowledge according to the image of your Creator.  11 In Christ there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all.

  • Seeing who you are in Christ strengthens who you are in life.
