Knowing is Becoming

I John 2:3-6 This is how we know that we know him: if we keep his commands. The one who says, “I have come to know him,” and yet doesn’t keep his commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps his word, truly in him the love of God is made complete. This is how we know we are in him: The one who says he remains in him should walk just as he walked. (CSB)

1 John 4:16b–17 God is love, and the one who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him. 17 In this, love is made complete with us so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment, because as he is, so also are we in this world. (CSB)

Philippians 1:27 Just one thing: As citizens of heaven, live your life worthy of the gospel of Christ. (CSB)

1. Becoming like Christ in our Love

  • John 13:34–35  “I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you are also to love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (CSB)
  • John 13:1 Before the Passover Festival, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. (CSB)
  • John 13:14 So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done for you. (CSB)
  • Ephesians 4:32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. (NIV)

2. Becoming like Christ in our Purity

  • 1 John 3:2,3   Dear friends, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that when he appears, we will be like him because we will see him as he is. And everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself just as he is pure. (CSB)
  • Ephesians 4:24 put on the new self, the one created according to God’s likeness in righteousness and purity of the truth. (CSB)

3. Becoming like Christ in our Purpose

  • John 20:21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, I also send you.” (CSB)
  • Luke 19:10 “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” (CSB)

4. Becoming like Christ in our Power

  • 2 Corinthians 4:6–7  For God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of God’s glory in the face of Jesus Christ. Now we have this treasure in clay jars, so that this extraordinary power may be from God and not from us. (CSB)
  • Romans 8:11  And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, then he who raised Christ from the dead will also bring your mortal bodies to life through his Spirit who lives in you. (CSB)

5. Becoming like Christ in our Pain

  • Philippians 3:10–11  I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead. (NIV)
  • 2 Cor 4:10–11 We always carry the death of Jesus in our body, so that the life of Jesus may also be displayed in our body. 11 For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’s sake, so that Jesus’s life may also be displayed in our mortal flesh. (CSB)
