1. INTRODUCTION

  • I Corinthians 13:4-5 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude
  • “Love is giving someone what they need the most, when they deserve it the least, at great personal cost.” (Chip Ingram)
  • I Peter 2:17 Show respect to everyone.

2. HOW TO IMPROVE IN GIVING AND GETTING RESPECT.

A. Develop a “God-View” of people.

1. Psalm 8:5 (ESV) For you made man only a little lower than God, and you crowned us with glory and honor.

2. Every person is GOD’S creation and is to be treated accordingly.

B. Your outward respect reveals your inward condition.

1. How we treat others tells them something about our relationship with God.

I John 4:8 – Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. (NIV)

2. How we treat others tells them something about our spiritual maturity.

Luke 6:36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

C. Develop the art of tact.

    • 1.Proverbs 15:4 Kind words bring life but cruel words crush your spirit.
    • Proverbs 15:28 (ESV) – The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pour out evil things.

D. Respect is disagreeing without being disagreeable.

Romans 12:17-21 Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. 19 Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath {of God,} for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 “But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals upon his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

E. Love and lead others to Christ with a gentle and patient spirit.

    • Colossians 4:5-6 Live wisely among those who are not Christians, and make the most of every opportunity. 6 Let your conversation be gracious and effective so that you will have the right answer for everyone.
    • I Peter 3:15 If anyone asks you why you believe as you do be ready to tell them and do it in a gentle and respectful way.
    • Romans 5:8 (ESV) – But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
