LOVE, LEAD & LIFE CHANGE

Part 1 – Being a Church That Knows Why We Are Here
Acts 1:8-14

Dr. Mark S. Hartman, Lead Pastor

Acts 1:8-14  “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”  9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.  10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them.  11 “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”  12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk from the city.  13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.  14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

1. A CHURCH THAT DOES GOD’S PURPOSE HAS GOD’S BLESSING ON IT.  (Acts 1:8)

  • Acts 1:8  But you shall receive power, after the Holy Spirit is come upon you; and you shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

1. Jesus invited His disciples to be the mouthpiece of Christ, the legs, arms, eyes, and ears of the Savior.  He had come to seek and to save those who were lost.  Now, the Lord has invited them and us to join Him.

2. God’s purpose for us individually and collectively comes in two parts – loving & leading people to Christ and being used by God to see those who come to Him experience life change.

2. A CHURCH WHO REFUSES TO ALLOW OBSTACLES TO STOP IT, RECEIVES GOD’S PROVISION.

A. No matter what barrier we face, God has a solution for every roadblock. All we must do is open our minds to Him.

B. Philippians 4:13  I can do all things through Him who gives me strength.

3. A CHURCH THAT IS UNITED IN CHRIST, EXPERIENCES GOD’S ANOINTING.  (Acts 1:14)

A. Acts 1:14 All of these with their minds in full agreement devoted themselves steadfastly to prayer, waiting together.  (Amplified)

B. Full agreement means that they finally, as a church, came to forgiveness and unity.  They joined hands to be one family.

C. They cleared relationships and gave themselves to a deep common love for one another.

4. A CHURCH THAT PRAYS SEES GOD’S POWER.  (Acts 1:14)

  • Acts 1:14  All of these with their minds in full agreement devoted themselves steadfastly to prayer, waiting together.  (Amplified version)
