(I Corinthians 16:1-2)

1. GIVING BACK TO GOD INVOLVES EVERYONE, INCLUDING ME.

A. 1 Corinthians 16:1-2  Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do.  2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

B. This phrase includes everyone and excludes no one.

2. GIVING BACK TO GOD IS TO BE CONSISTENT.

A. 1 Corinthians. 16:2  On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. (NIV)

B. The Bible teaches that our giving is to be habitual.

3. GIVING BACK TO GOD INVOLVES A PERCENTAGE OF WHAT EACH OF US HAS RECEIVED.

A. 1 Corinthians 16:2  On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made.

B. The Greek phrase translated “in keeping with his income” means proportionate which can be understood as a percentage.

C. Malachi 3:8-10  “Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me.” But you ask, ‘How do we rob you?’ “In tithes and offerings.  9 You are under a curse– the whole nation of you – because you are robbing me.  10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.”

4. WE GIVE BACK TO GOD WITH OUR TITHES TO THE CHURCH.

A. 1 Corinthians 16:2  Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

B. We are to lay aside our offering to the Lord’s work during the week and then on the first day of the week bring it to the common treasury of the church so that it may be used for the Lord’s work.

5. GIVING BACK TO GOD ALLOWS HIM TO BLESS US IN RETURN.

A. 2 Corinthians 9:6,8  Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.  8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

B. The Bible teaches that God will give back to us to the degree that we give to Him.

C. When people choose not to give faithfully to God they miss out on some important things.

1. They miss out on some things God would have provided for them but didn’t because they weren’t obedient.

2. They miss the opportunity to be a part of other people’s lives in communicating the gospel to them.

3. They miss out on treasures in heaven which would have been there had they been faithful.

Matthew 6:19-21  Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.  21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
