Mark 12:41-44

Dr. Mark S. Hartman, Lead Pastor

I. INTRODUCTION

Two days after Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, on Tuesday of that week, Jesus was at the Temple. (Show pictures 1 – 2 of the Temple when requested) Jesus came back to the Temple. He had been teaching but now, Jesus was sitting in the Courtyard of the Woman, he was watching people giving the money at the Temple.

Mark 12:41-44 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. 43 Calling His disciples to him, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything – all she had to live on.” (NIV)

1. JESUS IS IMPRESSED WHEN WE GIVE WITHOUT SEEKING ANY PERSONAL BENEFIT.

A. The offering boxes were out on the floors.

B. 2 Chronicles 16:9 The eyes of the LORD search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him.

C. Matthew 6:1-2 Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. (NIV)

1. Matthew 16:27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with His angels, and then He shall reward every man according to His works.

2. Revelation 22:12 And, behold, I come quickly, and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

2. JESUS IS IMPRESSED WHEN WE GIVE AS AN ACT OF LOVE.

A. When we are motivated out of love for God.

B. When we are driven out of love to see God’s work extended.

3. JESUS IS IMPRESSED WHEN WE LOVE TO THE LEVEL OF SACRIFICE.

A. Mark 12:44 For all they did cast in of their abundance, but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.

B. 2 Corinthians 8:9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich.

C. Mark 12:41 Jesus beheld how the people cast money into the treasury.

1. Ephesians 2:8-9 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.

2. Titus 3:5 God saved us, not because of righteous things we have done, but because of His mercy.

D. Revelation 14:13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this down: Blessed are those who die in the Lord from now on. Yes, says the Spirit, they are blessed indeed, for they will rest from their hard work; for their good deeds follow them!”
