INTRODUCTION

Matthew 1:18-25  This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about:  His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.  [19] Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.  [20] But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.  [21] She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.’  [22] All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:   [23] ‘The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel’–which means, “God with us.”   [24] When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.  [25] But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

1. JOSEPH WAS FACED WITH A TERRIBLE DILEMMA.

A. Joseph and Mary had been picked for each other and were on the verge of marriage but all of that was threatened by a shock.  Mary was with child.

B. Joseph had three options:

1. Expose Mary publicly.

2. Quietly get out of the marriage agreement.

3. Marry her anyway.

4. Matthew 1:19  Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

C. Matthew 1:20  But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.’

2. IN CHRIST, GOD CAME TO BE WITH US.  (Matthew 1:21-23)

A. Matthew 1:21-23  She will give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because he will save His people from their sins.  [22] All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: [23] ‘The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a Son, and they will call Him Immanuel’–which means, “God with us.”

B. John 1:1-2,14  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was with God in the beginning.  The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.  We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

1. Man had developed so many strange concepts about God.  God wanted us to know the truth.

Hebrews 1:1-3  Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. [2] But now in these final days, He has spoken to us through his Son. …  [3] The Son reflects God’s own glory, and everything about Him represents God exactly…

2. God took on a body so that He could feel what we feel.

Hebrews 4:14-16  …We have a great High Priest who has gone to heaven, Jesus the Son of God. Let us cling to Him and never stop trusting Him.  [15] This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for He faced all of the same temptations we do, yet He did not sin.  [16] So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God.  There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it.

3. God took on a body so that He could do for us what we could not do for ourselves.

Matthew 1:20-21  Mary will give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.
