Matthew 28:16-20

Ender Palencia, Pastor of Missions

Our purpose is to love and lead all people to life change in Christ.

Matthew 28:16-20  Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him, they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (ESV)

1. Our Mission Comes from the Highest Source of Authority.

Matthew 28:18  And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”

Philippians 2:5-11  Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

  • Because Jesus was given all authority over sin and death, we can join Him in His mission to rescue others from the consequences of sin and death.

2. Our Mission is to Make Disciples of all nations.

Matthew 28:19-20a  “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”

  • A disciple is someone who learns from Jesus to live like Jesus.
  • To make disciples means to love all people, and true love should compel us to lead them to see the life change they can experience in Christ.

John 3:16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

A. We Make Disciples by Going to all people.
Matthew 9:35  And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction.

B. We Make Disciples by Baptizing those who believe in Christ.
Romans 10:17  So faith comes from hearing and hearing through the word of Christ.

C. We Make Disciples by Teaching them to obey.
2 Timothy 2:1-2 You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, 2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.

3. Our Mission is Powered by God Himself.

Matthew 28:20b  And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

  • When we believe in Christ, we receive the Spirit of God and, therefore, the power of God to live life and fulfill our mission.
