2 John

March 10, 2019
Dr. Mark S. Hartman, Lead Pastor SCBC

INTRODUCTION (2 John 1:1-3)

2 John 1:1-3   The elder, To the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in the truth–and not I only, but also all who know the truth– 2  because of the truth, which lives in us and will be with us forever: 3  Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, will be with us in truth and love. (NIV)

A church is a collection of chosen ones God has saved through His Son, Jesus.

1. WHAT TIES OUR CHURCH TOGETHER?  (2 John 1:2-4)

A. What ties us together is Jesus and God’s Word.  Our unity and the source of our unity for each other is that we are a part of the same spiritual family of God and we are committed to the TRUTH of God’s Word, out of which our LOVE for each other rises.

B. We are connected by the Truth of Jesus Christ and His Word.

2. WE ARE TO OPERATE OUR LIVES WITH GRACE.  (2 John 1:5)

A. 2 John 1:5   And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another. (NIV)

B. Matthew 22:38-39  Jesus replied, “‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’   38  This is the first and greatest commandment.  39  A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

C. John 13:35  By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.” (NIV)

D. Our love for each other and for others around us tells others around us that Jesus has something of great value to offer them.

E. The end result of compromising the truth of God’s Word always disqualifies that church from making an impact for God.

F. 2 John 1:3  Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, will be with us in Truth and Love

G. John 1:14  The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of Grace and Truth. (NIV)

H. Romans 3:4  Let God be true and everyone who disagrees with Him be proven to be a liar.

I. Our church will operate just like our Lord Jesus Christ.  We will operate with both Truth and Grace.

3. WE ARE TO WALK IN TRUTH AND GRACE.  (2 John 1:4, 6-11)

A. 2 John 1:4 It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father commanded us. (NIV

B. 2 John 1:6  And this is love: that we walk in obedience to His commands. As you have heard from the beginning, His command is that you walk in love. (NIV)

C. To walk in the truth and in love simply means to incorporate the Bible into every part of lives.

D. 2 John 1:9 Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. (NIV)

E. Our continued faithfulness to God is evidence that we truly know Him.

F. 2 John 1:7-8; 10-11   Many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist.   8  Watch out that you do not lose what you have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully.   10  If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take him into your house or welcome him. 11  Anyone who welcomes him shares in his wicked work. (NIV)

The Action Steps I Will Take This Week Are…

    • I will speak to a minister at the Next Step Center about how I can know Jesus as my Savior.
    • I recommit myself to trust the Bible and live by what it teaches.
    • I recommit myself to operate in the principle of love.
