INTRODUCTION

  • 2 Timothy 1:7  For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of self-control.
  • Hebrews 12:1-2  Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which does so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

1. A FOCUSED LIFE ALWAYS PURSUES THE MOST IMPORTANT GOALS.

A. When God talks about our life, here are the most important goals He mentions:

1. God wants us to know Him.

John 17:3  And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

2. God wants us to experience our best life.

John 10:10  My (Jesus) purpose is to give life in all its fullness.

3. God wants us to accomplish a mission for Him.

John 17:4  I have brought You glory on earth by completing the work You gave me to do.

4. God wants to prepare us for heaven.

a. Ephesians 1:10  And this was His purpose; that when the time is right, He will gather us all together… to be with him in Christ forever!

b. Life is preparation for eternity.  You were made to live forever with God.

B. All of life is to be thought of as a race to run.

1. 2 Timothy 4:7  I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

2. 1 Corinthians 9:24  Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.

3. Acts 20:24  I consider my life worth nothing if only I may finish the race and complete the task that the Lord Jesus has given me.

2. A FOCUSED LIFE HAS AS ITS GOAL TO WIN.

A. Remove all distractions.  (Hebrews 12:1)

1. Hebrews 12:1   …let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which does so easily beset us…

a. Galatians 6:9  Let us not get tired of doing what is right, for after a while we will reap a harvest of blessings if we don’t get discouraged and give up.

b. “You’ll never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine.”  (John Maxwell)

B. Stay motivated by remembering the Reason and the Reward.  (Hebrews 12:1)

1. Hebrews 12:1 …let us run with patience the race that is set before us…

2. The word patience means “staying power.”

3. The word patience also means enduring joy.

4. One of the ways to not quit when it gets hard is by remembering the reason we are in this race in the first place.

5. The reward at the end of the race keeps us going.

a. 1 Corinthians 9:25-26  All athletes practice strict self-control. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. 26 So I run straight to the goal with purpose in every step.

b. There are three kinds of motivations in life:

1. Internal motivation — you motivate yourself.

2. External motivation — you trust other people to motivate you.

3. Eternal motivational — the reward that is coming from God.

c. 2 Corinthians 4: 8-10; 16-18  We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed and broken. We are perplexed, but we don’t give up and quit. 9 We are hunted down, but God never abandons us. We get knocked down, but we get up again and keep going.  16 …we never give up…17 For our present troubles are quite small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us an immeasurably great glory that will last forever! 18 So we don’t look at the troubles we can see right now; rather, we look forward to what we have not yet seen. For the troubles we see will soon be over, but the joys to come will last forever.

C. Rely on Christ.  (Hebrews 12:2)

1. Hebrews 12:2  Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

2. As we run our race, we are keeping our eyes upon Jesus.

3. The Jesus Christ we are watching.

a. He is the author of our faith.

b. He is the finisher of our faith.

c. He endured the cross.

d. He despised the shame.

D. Live your life focused on the reason and the reward and by relying on Christ to see you through all the way to the end.  That is Power Living!
