Dr. Mark S. Hartman, Lead Pastor – SCBC

A. Balanced living is one of the keys to living a peak performing life.  (Dr. Charles Garfield, Seven Secrets of Outstanding Achievers)

B. 2 Timothy 1:7  For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of self-control.

C. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27  Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win! 25 All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. 26 So I run with purpose in every step.  (NLT)

2. Philippians 3:10  That I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable unto His death;

B. God wants us to experience life as He created it to be.

John 10:10   My purpose is to give life in all its fullness.  (Jesus)

C. God wants us to accomplish a mission for Him.

John 17:4  I have brought You glory on earth by completing the work You gave me to do.  (Jesus)

D. God wants to prepare us for heaven.

1. Ephesians 1:10  And this was God’s purpose; that when the time is right He will gather us all together… to be with Him in Christ forever!

2. Life is preparation for eternity.  You were made to live forever with God.

E. Between now and heaven, there is a race to run.

1. 2 Timothy 4:7  I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

2. 1 Corinthians 9:24  Run in such a way as to get the prize. Run with purpose in every step.

A. Proverbs 17:24  An intelligent person aims at wise actions, but a foolish person starts off in many directions.  (Paraphrase)

Focus is the key to a life of balance.

B. Proverbs 12:11  …It is foolish to waste time on useless projects.  (Paraphrase)

III. What will be AT the CORE of MY life?

B. Matthew 6:33  But seek first God’s kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you.

IV. What will be the character of MY life?

A. Proverbs 2:7  God grants a treasure of common sense to the honest.  He is a shield to those who walk with integrity.  (NLT)

B. Character is doing what is right as defined by God, regardless of personal cost.

C. 1 Timothy 4:7  train yourself to be godly.

V. How will I treat THE OTHERS in MY life?

A. Romans 12:16  Live in harmony with one another.

B. Romans 12:18  If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everybody.

C. Philippians 2:3-4  Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than himself;  4 do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.

A. The Bible talks about working hard.

Ephesians 6:6-8  Work hard, but not just to please your employers when they are watching.  As employees of Christ, do the will of God with all your heart.  7 Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.  8 Remember that the Lord will reward each one of us for the good we do…

B. The same Bible also talks about a balance between work and rest.

Ecclesiastes 4:8  Here is a man who is always working, never satisfied with the wealth he has.  For whom is he working so hard and denying himself any pleasure? This is useless and a miserable way to live.
