God is moving in the Prison Ministry of Sugar Creek

The Prison Ministry at Sugar Creek focuses on one-on-one evangelism, discipleship, and mentoring of men and women who are incarcerated in the county jail and the Texas state prisons. Sugar Creek members are trained to share the Good News and teach inmates the basic disciplines of the Christian life. They share hope, forgiveness and encouragement with inmates that often don’t receive any of these blessings.

If you would like to participate in this ministry, please contact: ghill@sugarcreek.net.

More information on these prison ministries

Sugar Creek members are very active in ministering in the Ft. Bend County Jail in Richmond Tx. We currently have 20+ trained “spiritual mentors” that are assigned to an inmate who has requested someone to help them get back on track in life. These mentors meet with their assigned mentee once a week either at the county jail or by and online zoom call. They act as encouragers, prayer warriors and bible discussion leaders for these hurting people. Many of the incarcerated have been led to faith in Christ and started to grow in their faith. This is a highly effective ministry and one that is a blessing to those that mentor.

Sugar Creek is very active in ministering in the TDCJ system of prisons here in Texas. Specifically, at the Stringfellow, Terrell and Jester III units which are local to our area. Men in these units have committed crimes ranging from possession of a controlled substance to capital murder. Though locked inside their prison, men are experiencing God’s freedom through the ministry of Sugar Creek.

Sugar Creek shares two primary programs with inmates.

Malachi Dads is an eight-month, weekly bible study based on Malachi 4:6 which says that “He (God) will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers”. The inmate fathers want to learn how to be an effective dad and father their children from prison. Most of the inmates did not grow up with a father so they didn’t have a role model to follow in parenting their own children. This study, led by trained laymen from Sugar Creek and other local churches, trains fathers on how to meet the need that every child has in his heart and that is, that they want and seek their father’s approval and acceptance, no matter what their current relationship is with their father. It teaches the inmates that they can “speak into the lives” of their children and give them direction, instruction, acceptance, and love. The results of this program have been amazing. Children and fathers have been reconciled to tach other with the long-term impact of their renewed relationship helping to keep their children from following them into prison. This program is reducing that cycle.

Day With Dad is a two-day event in the Fall where inmate dads are selected to have their children come and spend a Saturday with them in the prison. For some of the children it has been years since they have seen their dad. Some have even met for the first time at this event. The day before, Friday, is spent with just the men being taught how to be a Godly father to their children and how they can bless them by the words they say to them. On Saturday morning, when the children arrive, the men greet them, play group games, have lunch together, do some crafts, hear the Gospel presented, have a father/daughter dance, and spend some quality time with them. At the end of the day, everyone goes outside for a balloon release. This is a very emotional time for the children, dads, and volunteers as they say goodbye to each other.
