Part 2 – How Do I Decide How Much to Give to Reach Beyond?
2 Corinthians 8, 9

September 23, 2018
Dr. Mark S. Hartman, Lead Pastor

I. INTRODUCTION

A. God chooses to use us for His Glory and our blessing.

B. The Sugar Land campus has three goals in our REACH >> Beyond Campaign over the next 2 years:

1. To pay off the remaining $2.6mm owed on the Missouri City campus so we can be debt free again.

2. To raise $2.4mm to buildout a store front facility for the launch of our third campus in Richmond / Rosenberg.

3. To raise $700,000 to give to Missions Month we always observe every year.

In total, we are asking our members to pledge $5.7mm to be given over the next 2 years for these three projects. We are asking that these gifts be over and above our tithe to our church’s budget.

II. THE FIRST STEP IS TO OPEN OUR HEARTS TO SACRIFICE.

A. Jesus gives to us the example of sacrifice.

1. 2 Corinthians 8:9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich. (NIV)

2. Philippians 2:6-9 Jesus, being in very nature God… 7 made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross! (NIV)

3. The word sacrifice is actually two Latin words that have been brought together. One “sacra” which means sacred and another is “facio”, which means to make. To sacrifice is to make something sacred. The word sacred means to set apart for God.

B. We can’t give back to God equally because some have more financial resources than others. We are called not to equal gifts, but to equal sacrifice. What would be a sacrifice for you?

C. 2 Corinthians 8:5 The Macedonian Christians did not do what we expected. They gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God’s will.

D. “God, here we are. We are yours. What would You like me to sacrifice for Jesus with this special offering?”

III. THE SECOND STEP IS TO WALK THROUGH THE PROCESS OF A RIGHT ATTITUDE IN OUR GIVING. (2 Corinthians 9:6-7)

2 Corinthians 9:7 Each person should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

1. Give decisively.

a. Decisive giving is “giving with conviction” based upon:

(1) obedience to God’s Word,

(2) prayer, and

(3) planning, and then leaving the results with Him.

b. The context of this passage was written about how to take up a special offering. It has nothing to do with the tithe.

c. Decisive giving is giving not impulsively but thinking it through and praying it out.

2. Give voluntarily.

3. Give cheerfully.

a. The Greek word for cheerfully is the Greek word hilaros, which means hilarious.

b. We can give with joy when we give for the right reasons:

1. We give to God out of our love for Him.

2. We give to God out of our gratitude.

3. We give to God out of our faith.

2 Corinthians 9:6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. (NIV)

4. We give to God out of our desire to partner with God in His goals.

Proverbs 10:16 A good person’s earnings advances the cause of righteousness.

IV. THE PROMISE: I CAN EXPECT GOD TO MEET MY NEEDS. (2 Corinthians 9:8)

A. 2 Corinthians 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

B. “I can and will take care of you. Trust and obey what I tell you to do.” (God)

C. Matthew 6:21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Action Points:

1. God is worthy of my sacrifice of love toward Him and His mission through Sugar Creek.
2. My family / I will use the information Pastor Mark shared today to work through what we are / I am committing to give over the next two years in helping with the Reach Beyond Campaign.
3. My family lives in the Richmond / Rosenberg area. We believe God wants us to be a part of the launch team for the new campus. We have not yet responded. Please sign us up!
