INTRODUCTION

In Hebrew, Malachi’s name means My Messenger.

Three Questions God Asked His People

1. I love you. Do you actually love me?
2. Why do you think I have turned a deaf ear to you?
3. Will you return to Me in a way that costs you something?

THREE AREAS OF DRIFT

1. ARE YOU DRIFTING IN YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD?

Malachi 1:7-8 “By saying that the Lord’s table is contemptible. When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice lame or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?” says the Lord Almighty.

Malachi 3:13-15 “You have spoken arrogantly against me,” says the Lord. “Yet you ask, ‘What have we said against you?’ “You have said, ‘It is futile to serve God. What do we gain by carrying out his requirements and going about like mourners before the Lord Almighty? But now we call the arrogant blessed. Certainly evildoers prosper, and even they put God to the test, they get away with it.’”

2. IS THERE A DRIFT IN YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR SPOUSE?

Malachi 2:14-16 You ask, “Why?” It is because the Lord is the witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have been unfaithful to her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant Has not the one God made you? You belong to him in body and spirit. And what does the one God seek? Godly offspring. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful to the wife of your youth. “The man who hates and divorces his wife,” says the Lord, the God of Israel, “does violence to the one he should protect,” says the Lord Almighty. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful.

3. IS THERE A DRIFT IN YOUR GIVING BACK TO GOD?

Malachi 3:8–10 “Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me. “But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed you?’ “In tithes and offerings. You are cursed with a curse, for you have robbed Me, even this whole nation. Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try Me now in this,” says the LORD of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it.”

The principles and purpose of tithing are twofold.

A. To worship the Lord as provider of all things.

B. To condition the heart against greed and selfishness.

1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

2 Corinthians 8:7 But since you excel in everything – in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you – see that you also excel in this grace of giving.

CONCLUSION

Joel 2:12-13 “Even now,” declares the Lord, “return to Me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.

Even now … after you have lost your temper and let your words fly.
Even now … after you have shaded the truth and manipulated the situation and called it ministry.
Even now … after you let selfishness and sin drive your decisions about money.
Even now … after you have gossiped and run other people down and rushed to judgement.
Even now … after you have made a mess of things in your marriage.

God says – “Return to me.”
