SHALOM

November 29, 2020

Don Waybright, Pastor of Love & Lead / Missions

SHALOM is the Hebrew word for PEACE

Definition of Shalom – more than absence of warfare, conflict or peace of mind – Shalom means universal flourishing, wholeness, delight…a state-of-affairs that inspires joyful wonder at its Creator…

Shalom is the way things ought to be!

The ABSENCE of SHALOM is the absence of the Gospel, and the absence of the Gospel is the absence of beauty and relationship.

The presence of the Gospel is the restoration of God’s design for a people and community – and it is marked by the presence of harmonious relationship and beauty – the presence of SHALOM.

The 4 main areas of broken relationship as a result of the Curse of Sin are…

  • God and People
  • People Self Identity – OUR Self Identity
  • Our relationship with Others
  • Our relationship with the Creation and the Institutions created by God…marriage, family, work, and more.

Genesis 12:2-3  I will make you into a great nation…I will BLESS you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others.  I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt.  All the families on earth will be blessed through you.

Blessed to be a Blessing

Jeremiah 29:7  Work for the Shalom of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive and PRAY to the Lord for it… for when it has SHALOM you will have SHALOM.

Colossians 1:20  …through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made PEACE with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.

John 14:27  Peace (SHALOM) I leave with you; my peace (SHALOM) I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

THE PRESENCE OF GOD IS THE PRESENCE OF SHALOM

THE HOLY SPIRIT IN US is the power to be the agent of, the ambassador of, SHALOM!

A simple pattern of how the church can restore SHALOM in communities – 5 activities that start with the letter ‘P’

1) PRAY Fervently – May your Kingdom Come – Shalom Come

2) PRESENCE – Incarnation

3) POWER

(a) The Kingdom of God is not talk BUT POWER

(b) Relational Power – collaborative capacity

4) PRACTICE – hands and feet of Jesus

5) PROCLAMATION – the Gospel

Isaiah 52:7  How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace (SHALOM), who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!”

The Gospel is the message of SHALOM – the Message of the Kingdom – The Victory has been WON – There is a NEW ORDER – the Kingdom of God!

The GOSPEL is NOT about Getting people to Heaven …

The Gospel IS about bringing Heaven into People!

The Gospel is an all-encompassing power that RECREATES us to bring forth a new way of thinking, new way of living, a new way of loving – NOW in this world and forever.

Revelation 21:2  And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.

Revelation 22:3-5  No longer will there be a curse upon anything. For the throne of God and of the Lamb will be there, and his servants will worship him. And they will see his face, and his name will be written on their foreheads. And there will be no night there—no need for lamps or sun—for the Lord God will shine on them. And they will reign forever and ever.

Our Time Here on earth is simply TRAINING FOR REIGNING.

There will be a TEST to see what you learned at the end of your life on earth.  The question will be “HOW DID YOU LOVE?”

Luke 4:18-19,21

18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free,
19  and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.
20 “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!” (Jesus)

Isaiah 58:6-12

Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you.
Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people.
Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless.
Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help.
“Then your salvation will come like the dawn, and your wounds will quickly heal.
Your godliness will lead you forward, and the glory of the Lord will protect you from behind.
Then when you call, the Lord will answer. ‘Yes, I am here,’ he will quickly reply.
“Remove the heavy yoke of oppression. Stop pointing your finger and spreading vicious rumors!
10 Feed the hungry, and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon.
11 The Lord will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring.
12 Some of you will rebuild the deserted ruins of your cities. Then you will be known as a rebuilder of walls and a restorer of homes.

The Kingdom of God is NOW, BUT NOT YET in its fullness.

SHALOM is NOW, BUT NOT QUITE, in its magnificence.

This GOSPEL (RESTORATION of Shalom) will be preached to the whole world, as a testimony to all nations, then the End will come!  Matthew 24:14
