Part 2 – What Faith Is And How To Get It
(Hebrews 11:1-6; Selected Scriptures)

Dr. Mark S. Hartman, Lead Pastor

Romans 1:17  …The just (those who know Christ) shall live by faith.

A. Hebrews 11:6  And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He is and that He rewards those who earnestly seek him.

B. Hebrews 11:6 means, “He/she  that comes to God must believe that God is Who God says He is.  We must accept God for Who He has told us He is and then act on it.”

A. Hebrews 11:1  Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.  (NASB)

B. “Faith is the assurance of things hoped for.”

1. The word hope in the Bible means something that God has promised to come to pass.

2. When we trust in a promise of God, we are guaranteed to get what He has promised us.  You can “take it to the bank.”

3. He doesn’t tell us when or how, but it is now yours because of your faith in what God promised you.

C. “Faith is the conviction of things not seen.”

Faith is seeing something God has promised in advance before it has become reality.

D. Biblical trust is not presumption; it is not walking on thin ice, going out on a limb, or doing something crazy.  Trust is not wishful thinking, or even positive thinking.  Trust is believing in a promise God has made to me.  When I believe in a promise God has made and I act on it, my trust guarantees that I will get it.

E. 2 Corinthians 1:20  For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” (for you) in Christ. (NIV)

George Muller’s Book of Bible Promises:

F. Every promise has conditions.  You have to meet the conditions and claim then claim the promise by faith.

G. You might or might not have overwhelming talent, but you can learn how to have overwhelming faith.

A. Embrace the benefits of trusting God and your faith will grow.

1. My faith determines how much God will bless my life.

Matthew 9:29  According to your faith, it will be done unto you.

2. My faith is the key to impossible problems being solved in my life.

Matthew 17:20  If you have faith as small as a mustard seed… nothing will be impossible to you.

3. My faith builds my relationship with the God of the universe.  (Hebrews 11:6)

B. Bring more of God’s Word into your life and your faith will grow.

1. Romans 10:17  So, then, faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.

2. “I prayed and thought that someday faith would come down and strike me like lightning.  But it didn’t come at all.  One day I read Romans 10:17 and for the first time I realized that if I wanted faith, I would get it by opening my Bible and applying what it says.  I began to study it and faith has been growing ever since.”  (D.L. Moody)

C. Begin responding correctly to tough times and your faith will grow.

1. Romans 5:3-5  We can rejoice, too, when we run into PROBLEMS and trials, for we know that they are good for us —they help us learn to be patient.  And PATIENCE develops strength of CHARACTER in us and helps us TRUST God more each time we use it UNTIL FINALLY our hope and faith are strong and steady. (TLB)

2.  Five steps in developing trust in Real Life:

1. Problems

2. Patience

3. Proven Character

4. Trust  the ability to throw oneself upon God.

5. Confidence – Confidence is simply habitual trust.
