INTRODUCTION

On the Sugar Land campus today we have a book available in the resource center written by one of our members, Norm Mason.  The Political Imperative – An Assignment From God

1. GOVERNMENT IS GOD’S IDEA.

A. God created civil government to accomplish His purposes.

Acts 17:26  From one man God created all the nations throughout the whole earth.  He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and God determined their boundaries. (NLT)

B. God created civil government to give us order and protection.

Romans 13:1b, 2, 4  For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. 2 So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted…  4 The authorities are God’s servants, sent for your good  (NLT)

C. God gives us the responsibility to submit to the government in which we are a part.

1. Romans 13:1-2  Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. (NIV)

2. We are to obey the laws of our government.

Romans 13:2  Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

3. Romans 13:4  For he (the police officer & judge) is God’s servant to do you good.  But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He (or she) is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.

4. Romans 13:5  Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience.

When there is a law that directly violates God’s explicit law in His Word, we must stand up against it in peaceful civil disobedience.

2. WE LIVE IN A GREAT COUNTRY!

The US has sent many young men and women to fight in foreign lands on behalf of those countries but never asked for any more land than is enough to bury those who did not return.  (Former US Secretary of State, Colin Powell)

A. We have the responsibility to love our country and appreciate what God has given to us here.

B. We have the responsibility to love and be respectful toward those with whom we disagree.

C. We have the responsibility to make an impact on our future through our vote.
