INTRODUCTION

Matthew 21:1-11  As the disciples and Jesus approached Jerusalem and came to Bethpage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me.  3 If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”  4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:  5 “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”  6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them.  7 They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on.  8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.  9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!”  “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”  “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”  10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”  11 The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.” (NIV)

Matthew 21:10  When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this (Jesus)?”

1. JESUS IS THE FULFILLED (P)ROMISE OF GOD.

A. Matthew 21:4-5  This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:  5 “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”

B. A faith that can be trusted has to be tested.  In hard times, God is testing our faith and making it stronger.

C. Daniel 9 is one of the greatest prophecies in the entire Bible.  Daniel 9 prophesied that from the decree to rebuild Jerusalem (March 14, 445 BC) it will be exactly 483 years until the Messiah arrives in Jerusalem.

2. If the religious leaders would have paid attention to Daniel 9’s prophecy, they would have known Jesus had to be the Promised One of God.

D. Because Jesus is God’s promise kept for us, you can count on God to fulfill the promises He has made to you.

2. JESUS IS THE (A)RRIVAL OF THE LONG-AWAITED KING.

A. Matthew 21:8, 10, 19  A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.  10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred.  19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere.  Look how the whole world has gone after Him!”

B. Psalm 24: 7-10  Lift up your heads, you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of Glory may come in. 8 Who is this King of Glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of Glory may come in. 10 Who is He, this King of Glory?  The Lord Almighty — He is the King of glory.

3. JESUS IS THE (L)AMB OF GOD.

A. On Palm Sunday, the people don’t know it, but they are actually selecting the Passover Lamb as they are selecting Jesus.

B. John 1:29 Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

C. 1 Corinthians 5:7  For Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed.

D. 1 Peter 1:18-20  For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a Lamb without blemish or defect.  20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.

4. JESUS IS THE (M)ISUNDERSTOOD MESSIAH.

When you come to Jesus for who He is, He won’t meet your expectations; He will exceed them even if you don’t understand it at the time.
