(Isaiah 50:10-11; Psalm 77)

INTRODUCTION

Isaiah 50:10  Who is among you that fears the LORD, That obeys the voice of His servant, That walks in darkness and has no light? Let him trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God. (NASB)

1. EVERYONE GOES THROUGH TIMES OF DARKNESS.

A. One definition of the word darkness in the Bible means to be in confusion, to not know which direction to take, to not know what to do with what you are going through.

B. Psalm 77:1-8  I cry out to God; yes, I shout!

Oh, that God would listen to me!  2 When I was in deep trouble, I searched for the Lord. All night long I prayed, with hands lifted toward heaven, but my soul was not comforted.

3 I think of God, and I moan, overwhelmed with longing for His help.  4 You don’t let me sleep.  I am too distressed even to pray!

5 I think of the good days, long since ended, 6 when my nights were filled with joyful songs.  I search my soul and ponder the difference now.  7 Has the Lord rejected me?  Will He never again be kind to me?  8 Is His unfailing love gone forever?  Have His promises permanently failed?  9 Has God forgotten to be gracious?  Has He closed the door on His compassion?

C. Job 19:8  God has set darkness at my paths.

D. 2 Corinthians 4:8  We are perplexed, but not in despair,…

2. ONLY IN THE DARKNESS CAN WE SEE CERTAIN THINGS.  (Isaiah 50:10)

A. Isaiah 50:10  Who is among you that fears the LORD, That obeys the voice of His servant, That walks in darkness and has no light?

B. Things we normally ignore stand out in the darkness.

Isaiah 45:3  I will give you the treasures of darkness.

C. Oftentimes, the faith that is born in the light is only developed in the darkness.

D. The darkness doesn’t last forever.

Psalm 112:4  Light arises in the darkness for the upright; He (God) is gracious and compassionate and righteous. (NASB)

3. HOW SHOULD WE RESPOND IN OUR TIMES OF DARKNESS? (Isaiah 50:10-11)

A. Isaiah 50:10  Who is among you that fears the LORD, That obeys the voice of His servant, That walks in darkness and has no light? Let him trust in the name of the LORD  (NASB)

B. First, recognize that there is a God.

C. Second, trust God in the darkness.

1. God, like a father, gives Himself, before He gives advice.

2. “Christ followers do not live by explanations. We live by promises.”  (Warren Wiersbe)

D. Third, lean on God to make it through.

1. Isaiah 50:10  Who is among you that fears the LORD, That obeys the voice of His servant, That walks in darkness and has no light? Let him trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God.  (NASB)

2. The word rely here literally means to lean upon for support.

3. “When Answers Aren’t Enough, There is Jesus” – Scott Wesley Brown

You have faced the mountains of desperation
You have climbed, you have fought, you have won
But THIS valley that lies coldly before you
Casts a shadow you cannot overcome

And just when you thought you had it all together
You knew every verse to get you through
But this time the sorrow broke more than just your heart
And reciting all those verses just won’t do

Chorus:
When answers aren’t enough, there is Jesus
He is more than just an answer to your prayer
And your heart will find a safe and peaceful refuge
When answers aren’t enough, He is there

E. Fourth, don’t manipulate the light in the darkness.

1. Isaiah 50:11  Behold, all you who kindle a fire, Who encircle yourselves with firebrands, Walk in the light of your fire And among the brands you have set ablaze. This you will have from My hand: You will lie down in torment.

2. When the light of explanation and understanding has not yet come from God, don’t get ahead of Him and make your own light because it will always lead you in the wrong direction.   Be patient for God to show the true light of this pain you are going through.

4. CONCLUSION

“When a train goes through a tunnel and it gets dark, you don’t throw away the ticket and jump off. You sit still and trust the engineer.”  (Corrie ten Boom)
