Ephesians 1:1-6

INTRODUCTION

  • “You know the truth and the truth will set you free.”
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17  Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he (she) is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! (NIV)

1. YOUR IDENTITY IS CENTERED IN CHRIST.

A. To be, “IN CHRIST,” means that anything that belongs to God, also belongs to you because are a member of God’s family.  It is your new identity.

B. Ephesians 1:1-3  Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus:  2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.   3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. (NIV)

C. To be “in Christ” means you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior.

D. 2 Corinthians 5:17  Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he (she) is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! (NIV)

E. Ephesians 1:3  God is blessing you with every spiritual blessing.

2. YOU HAVE BEEN in God’s heart for eternity.  (Ephesians 1:4)

A. Ephesians 1:4  For He chose us in Christ before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight.

1. Romans 10:13  For whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.  (NASB)

2. John 6:44  No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him.  (NASB)

3. John 15:16  You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit – fruit that will last. (NIV)

B. God chose you!

3. YOU ARE GOD’S CHILD FOREVER.  (Ephesians 1:5)

A. Ephesians 1:5  He predestined us to be adopted as His sons (and daughters) through Jesus Christ, in accordance with His pleasure and will –  (NIV)

B. In the time of the Bible, adoptions were irrevocable.

C. Psalm 27:10  Even if my mother and father forsake me the Lord will receive me.

4. KNOWING ALL YOUR WEAKNESSES, God STILL ACCEPTED YOU.  (Ephesians 1:5, 6)

A. Ephesians 1:5-6 …having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He has made us accepted in the Beloved.  (NKJV)

B. Romans 15:7  Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.  (NIV)

C. We are already accepted by God in the Beloved, which means in Christ.

D. Titus 3:5-7  God saved us, not because we were good enough to be saved but because of His kindness and grace by washing away our sins.  All because of what Jesus Christ our savior did [not because of what we did but because of what Jesus did] so that He could declare us good in God’s eyes.  (TLB)

E. God has accepted us not on the basis of what we have done but on the basis of what Christ has already done for us on the cross.

5. HOW SHOULD YOU RESPOND TO WHAT GOD HAS SAID ABOUT YOU?

A. First, make sure you are truly “In Christ.”

B. If you have accepted Christ, walk out of here today seeing yourself in a new way.  See yourself as God has told you He sees you.
