(Ephesians 1:5,11)

1. GOD HAS PREDESTINED A PURPOSE FOR OUR LIFE.

A. Ephesians 1:5; 11  God predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ in accordance with His pleasure and His will.  11 In Christ we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of God who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of His will.

B. Ephesians 1:5  God predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ in accordance with His pleasure and His will.

C. There are two words in the Greek language for the phrase  “child of God.”  One word for child is teknon which means little child, little baby Christian.  The second word for child is “huios” which means a grown-up child that acts like his/her father.

D. It is the second word for child that Ephesians 1:5 uses, and it is literally saying this:  You and I, who have accepted Christ as our Savior, have been predestined to one day be just like Jesus.

E. Romans 8:29  For God knew His people in advance, and He chose them to become like His Son, so that His Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.  (NLT)

F. Many people claim to be Christians, but there is a difference between being a fan of Jesus and a follower of Jesus.

G. This is the purpose of living – to grow up and to live out a life of love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness and self-control.  Every other thing is subpar and even destructive living.  This is the greatest life anyone could live.

2. IN CHRIST, OUR PURPOSE IS PREDESTINED TO BE LIKE JESUS.

The character qualities of Christ are called “The Fruit of the Spirit” which are love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness and self-control.  (Galatians 5:22)  The more we grow, the deeper these qualities grow in our lives.

3. THERE ARE THREE STAGES OF SPIRITUAL MATURITY DESCRIBED IN THE BIBLE.

A. 1 John 2:12-14  I am writing these things to all of you, my little children, because your sins have been forgiven in the name of Jesus our Savior. 13 I am saying these things to you older men because you really know Christ, the one who has been alive from the beginning. And you young men, I am talking to you because you have won your battle with Satan. And I am writing to you younger boys and girls because you, too, have learned to know God our Father.  14 And so I say to you fathers who know the eternal God, and to you young men who are strong with God’s Word in your hearts, and have won your struggle against Satan… (TLB)

B. Spiritual babyhood.

1 John 2:12-13  I am writing these things to all of you, my little children, because your sins have been forgiven in the name of Jesus our Savior.   13 And I am writing to you younger boys and girls because you, too, have learned to know God our Father.

  • Spiritual babyhood is a great thing.  It means we are beginning to understand:

1. Your sins have been forgiven in the Name of Jesus our Savior.
2. You have begun learning to know God as your Heavenly Father.

C. Spiritual adolescence.

1 John 2:13-14  And you young men, I am talking to you because you have won your battle with Satan. 14 And so I say to you fathers who know the eternal God, and to you young men who are strong with God’s Word in your hearts, and have won your struggle against Satan,

1. Spiritual adolescents are people who are deepening in their understanding of God’s Word.
Ephesians 4:14  …No longer be (spiritual) infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.  (NIV)

2. Spiritual adolescents are people who correctly differentiate between what is right and what is wrong.

a. When we are reading the word, “Satan” in 1 John 2:12-14, the Greek word is proneros.  Proneros means, “Someone who is dragging others down with him.”
b. 1 John 5:19  We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world (meaning culture) is under the control of the evil one.

3. The spiritual adolescent learns how to quickly repent; she/he learns how to resolve conflicts, how to make restitutions, how to overcome negative habits and sins, and learns how to live a victorious life.  (Luke 6:27-35)

D. Spiritually Mature Adults

1 John 2:13-14  I am saying these things to you older men (women)  because you really know Christ, the one who has been alive from the beginning. 14 And so I say to you fathers (mothers) who (really) know the eternal God… (TLB)

The reason that the word “really” know God is used is because it is a particular Greek word that means “intimate relationship.”

CONCLUSION

“The best time to plant a tree was 10 years ago.  The next best time is today.”
