INTRODUCTION

Ephesians 1:13-14  And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of Truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,  14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession–to the praise of his glory.   (NIV)

1. WE RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT WHEN WE ACCEPT CHRIST AS SAVIOR.

A. Ephesians 1:13  When you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed in Christ, you were also sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.  (HCSB)

B. 1 Corinthians 6:19   Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?

C. After the resurrection, when we accepted Christ into our lives, the Presence of God came to live inside of us.

D. Romans 8:9  … if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.  (NIV)

E. Romans 8:9 is a way of saying, “If you have accepted Jesus into your life, you have the Holy Spirit living inside of you.”

2. WE HAVE BEEN SEALED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT.

A. The Caesar’s ring imprint in the first century was a seal of ownership, authority, and protection.

B. To be sealed means that God has placed His mark of ownership upon us.

1. 1 Corinthians 6:129-20  Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your body. (NIV)

2. Romans 6:16  Don’t you realize that whatever you choose to obey becomes your master? You can choose sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God and receive His approval.

C. The seal represents authority.

1. The presence of the Holy Spirit within us means that we have the power / authority of God resident within us.

2. Matthew 28:18-20  All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

D. The seal represents protection.  We are God’s responsibility.

1. Romans 8:31-32  If God is for us, who can ever be against us? 32 Since He did not spare even His own Son but gave Him up for us all, won’t He also give us everything else?

2. Isaiah 54:17  “…no weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me,”  declares the Lord.

E. The seal represents that our relationship with God is in place forever.

1. Ephesians 4:30  Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by Whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

2. We are sealed all the way to the day we finally come into the Presence of God in heaven.

3. I am not working for my salvation; I am working from my salvation.

4. Hebrews 12:6, 11  For the Lord disciplines those He loves, and He punishes those He accepts as His children.  11 No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it is painful! But afterward there will be a quiet harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way. (NLT)

3. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE PROOF THAT EVERYTHING ELSE GOD PROMISED US IS COMING.  (Ephesians 1:14.)

A. Ephesians 1:14  (The Holy Spirit) …is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession–to the praise of His glory.  (NIV)

B. An engagement ring symbolizes a promise of marriage. The engagement ring is a promise of a wedding ring to come. The Holy Spirit in me is not my inheritance but He is the proof that everything else God has promised me is coming.
