(Ephesians 5:18-20)

Introduction

A. John 4:23-24   But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.  24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

B. To worship in spirit and truth isn’t so much about where we worship, the style of music we sing, or that it is singing at all.  What actually matters is that we worship God in spirit – meaning from our heart not from some “wrote or tradition.”  God wants our worship to come from inside of us – from our spirit to His Spirit, from our heart to His Heart.  And we are to worship in truth – the Truth about Who God is – He is worthy of our praise because of His Nature – His Power, Glory, Goodness, and Holiness. True worship comes by surrendering ourselves to a Holy God.

C. Ephesians 5:18-20  Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, 19 singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves and making music to the Lord in your hearts. 20 And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”  (NLT)

1. WORSHIP BEGINS WITH THE EMPOWERING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

Acts 1:8 And you shall receive power after the Holy Spirit comes and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth.

Ephesians 5:18  Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit,…

2. How do I LIVE a SURRENDERED LIFE?

A. We can only be filled with God after we empty ourselves of ourselves.

B. When you finally empty yourself of yourself, invite God to fill every part of you.

C. The filling of the Holy Spirit isn’t a feeling.  It is a decision to surrender.

D. Ephesians 5:18 “be filled with the Spirit.” means, “be continually filled with the Spirit.”

3. THE FIRST EFFECT OF A SURRENDERED LIFE IS WORSHIP.  (Ephesians 5:18-19)

A. Ephesians 5:18-19  Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, let the Holy Spirit fill and control you. 19 Then you will sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, making music to the Lord in your hearts.

B. The key to a deeper worship is surrender to God.  The more we surrender, the deeper the praise.

C. The kind of songs God cares about are those that come out of our heart, whatever the type.

4. The second EFFECT of a SURRENDERED life is gratitude.  (Ephesians 5:20)

A. Ephesians 5:20  And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

B. Ephesians 5:20  And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

C. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NASB)  …in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
